Welcome to KayLeigh's Cabin

Nestled back in the woods of Todd in Ashe County, North Carolina, KayLeigh's cabin sits by a small branch that flows year-round, surrounded by hardwoods and rhododendrons. The branch feeds into a bold creek on the backside of the property, so the sound of water is a constant, soothing source of peace and quiet. Lovingly furnished by KayLeigh with assistance from her Nana, we are delighted to share her "room" with you as you discover the beauty of Ashe County.

Rent KayLeigh's Cabin and support the Ashe County Armed Forces Tribute! Simply reserve your nights online as usual, but when you leave the cabin, pay by check. Checks are to be made payable to the Jeffersons Rotary Club Foundation, the 501c3 organization that supports the Tribute. In the memo section of your check, indicate "Armed Forces Tribute". For more information on the Tribute, go to www.AsheCountyArmedForces.org.

Watching KayLeigh's birth slam-dunked me head-over-heels in love with that amazing and miraculous creation ~~ my first grandchild ~~ and much like that first child, changed my life forever. Since that moment, my goal with her has been to convince her that the world revolves around her, since she will learn soon enough that it does not. Part of that process is having her own spot, KayLeigh's room. Now eleven, KayLeigh has spent many, many holidays and most of every summer with me, and had her own room in my house in Midland, Texas. She was only 4 when I sold the house to move to Ashe County, but was distraught that I would 'sell her room.. Not having enough space in my own little cabin to create her a room, she & I began the project of taking this storage building that was nothing but studs and OSB, and adding a bath, kitchen, short walls up in the bedroom, and windows. Far from complete, when she is here, we usually live here rather than next door. The red parrot upstairs was the first purchase over 3 years ago, when I spent 20 minutes convincing her that an estate sale would be fun. Luckily, upon arriving, she spied a soft drink box filled with sea shells, a glass dove and assorted other treasures. Asking when they would sell it, I sent her up to ask the auctioneer, who of course promptly took the box (he must have spied Nana over by the tree with a checkbook in hand!) and assured her it would be sold next. That first purchase was $2, and included the red parrot specifically for "HER" room. This is now a joint venture as we share our cabin with you, and we invite you to discover this special piece of heaven as we continue to complete it. Although we have an ongoing list of things to do, such as lighting, the closet, screens, gas grill, hot tub, steps leading to the creek, moving the woodpile, etc., we encourage you to make note of little things that will help us create a special yet convenient retreat.

A few things you need to know:

Once you cross the threshold, make yourself at home. Please treat KayLeigh's cabin with the same care and respect as you would your own home. The name of the street is Quiet Place for a reason: the neighborhood likes peace and quiet. Music and lively conversations outdoors are not a problem, but keep in mind you do have a few neighbors. Tippy is the dog and will befriend you forever if you pet her. If you are not a dog person, ignore her or speak firmly to her and she will not hang around long, but since she loves people, she may sun nearby, or on your doorstep. The cats are gentle but not used to being around a lot of people, so while some will attempt to welcome you to the place, most will show up only when I am home. Ignore them and they will ignore you (they may ignore you anyway!)

The overhead lights upstairs are turned on by the wall switch as you step onto the stairs just beyond the overstuffed .dog. chair. Hired help being what it is in the mountains, the electrician .forgot. to put the companion switch at the top of the stairs! So, as long as the light switch is left it the .up., the fan remote by the bed will operate the overhead light in the bedroom. Simply press the .light. switch on the fan remote to operate the switch when upstairs.

The phone is on the bookshelf by the entertainment center. It is my home phone, so if incoming calls are a problem, you can turn the ringer off. Make all the local calls you want to, but please, no long distance unless you use a calling card. If you use Verizon or Carolina West, you will have cellular phone service. Cingular/AT&T, SORRY! The gas fireplace pilot light is currently off, but if heat is needed, it has two switches, one for the heat volume and one for the blower. These are located right below the firescreen and can be accessed by lowering the metal door down towards you. The heat is the numbered knob on the right, with 1 being the lowest. The blower is the knob on the left. Since heat rises, it is easy to get the upstairs too warm. Please turn the heat down to 1 when you leave. In the trunk of the bedroom you will find a down comforter in case you find yourself chilly. There is a small space heater in the bathroom. If you use it, be sure to keep it a safe distance from any other object, especially fabric or wood. There is a small amount of hanging space in the bathroom closet, plus there are hooks on the wall in the bedroom and bathroom, and behind the wreath between the back door and bathroom doors. There is a basket of extra toiletry items in that closet that is yours to rummage through. You are welcome to use any thing in the refrigerator or pantry. If you think of something that is needed, please leave us a note as you go so we.ll have it ready for the next guests. I keep a supply of red & white wine for sale by the bottle in my house which runs $14-25 a bottle, but the beer in your fridge does not cost extra. Breakfast foods and fruit are in the cabin for your enjoyment. The charcoal grill, charcoal and lighter fluid are available for your use on the back deck. Please dispose of the ashes if you use it. DirecTV is available, but I do not watch tv so it is turned off unless I have company. I.ve turned it on and checked and all is working! A few games, puzzles and dominoes are in the cabinet with the TV, while movies are in the bookcase by the bathroom. The breaker box is behind the hanging quilt to the left of the entertainment center. The branch along the side of the cabin feeds into Laurel Creek. Feel free to wander out to it back behind the cabin. There are lots of crawdads to catch! Just be careful as it gets slippery. The key to the deadbolt to the back door (if you happen to need it) is on top of the refrigerator. The front door key is on the kitchen table, so when you leave, just leave it there with your payment. Please do not lock the front door when you leave. I am rarely home, yet when I am, feel free to ask questions or let me know if you have any needs. My cell phone is 336.977.1427, so please call me as needed. If you would leave me a list of anything that you think of during your stay that would make KayLeigh's Cabin more welcoming or something that is needed to make the stay more complete and stress-free, it would help enormously! As to why KayLeigh's special cabin is available to rent: through Divine intervention, I have become an avid supporter of our veterans and active service members. I do not discuss politics, but support those who have in the past and currently serve. In part, my appreciation is exhibited by helping coordinate an Armed Forces Tribute here in these lovely mountains. That is why if you are so inclined, I ask that you leave a contribution in the way of a check payable to the Jeffersons Rotary Club Foundation, with Armed Forces Tribute in the memo section of the check, in lieu of rent. I.ve left newspaper articles about last year's Jeffersons Rotary Club Armed Forces Tribute & the Sports Hall of Fame with the other information if you are interested, but please do not take the articles with you. The website is www.AsheCountyArmedForces.org if you have any interest in the project.

Now, make yourself at home and enjoy the mountains of Ashe County!
